The Fifth Annual NYC Independent Film Festival Celebrates the Art of Filmmaking

Fifth Annual NYC Independent Film Festival

Be a part of the NYC Independent Film Festival. The Fifth Annual NYC Independent Film Festival celebrates the art of filmmaking. Whether made by a professional filmmaker or a student with a camera, the event encourages the promotion of new and emerging voices in film, spoken word, music, and art.

The festival has reviewed well over a thousand films and, with each year, more and more people are submitting. The hope is to get into the festival where the artist's film will be shown to hundreds upon hundreds of people eagerly waiting to see what the talented independent creators have to offer.

Welcoming all categories of films including documentaries, features, shorts, animation, and music videos, the festival is spread across five days, October 15th to the 19th, 2014.
To submit a film, please click here.

Located in the heart of the Times Square, and accepting films from all around the world, the festival has a large selection of Indie Films and there is definitely something for everyone. Anyone who walks into the NYC Independent Film Festival is immediately surrounded by people who appreciate the art of filmmaking.

Aware of the process it takes to properly produce a film, these are people who have written, directed, edited, and even starred in their own productions. All dressed up with their family, friends, and loved ones, they sit together waiting to see their film up on the screen. A round of applause follows each film, every other person commenting on the film they have just watched, some even leaving with a few more bits of knowledge that they can apply to their own work next time. There’s a real sense of community, even though the filmmakers are from all around the world. There’s something about the craft that just brings people together.

There are people (tons of people) whose passion burns as bright on the screen as any Hollywood CGI effects. They might not cast high-profile actors or actresses, but they will be able to explore new dazzling talent, techniques and ideas.

The NYC Independent Film Festival may only just be just a half-decade old, but the impact it has on the “small” filmmaking community is huge. This is the perfect outlet for those who want to showcase their talents and possibly even use this as a stepping-stone to go to even greater heights. The NYC Independent Film Festival is proud to showcase such talents and is all about supporting those who have the talent and vision to be the next great filmmakers of future generations.

Surfers Call Santa Barbara a Perfect Vacation Destination

Santa Barbara Surfer

Surf culture is synonymous with the laid-back, carefree California lifestyle. Most Californians appreciate the spiritual connection between man and the sea, and many share a fascination with watching surfers in action. Matt Warshaw, surfer and author of The Encyclopedia of Surfing, rightly observes, “Surfing, alone among sports…turns not a skill into an art, but an inexplicable and useless urge into a vital way of life.” Surfing is an integral part of the Santa Barbara lifestyle, which attracts visitors from all over the world who come to experience life on “The American Riviera” firsthand.

Santa Barbara has always played an understated but influential role in the international surf scene. Pro surfers Tom Curren, Bobby Martinez, Kim Mearig, Kelly Slater and Shaun Thomson, and major brands Mr. Zog’s Sex Wax and Al Merrick’s Channel Islands Surfboards all call Santa Barbara home. Legendary surf spots, such as Rincon, the Ranch and Jalama, and living legends George Greenough, Bruce Brown and Renny Yater have also helped put Santa Barbara on the surfing map.

With museums dedicated to surfing, plentiful opportunities for surf instruction, and breaks that attract surfers from all over the world, Santa Barbara offers an accessible cultural immersion for the budding surfer and surf-curious. And shoppers will be stoked about the surf niche retail scene. From the flagship Channel Islands Surfboards shop to custom board boutiques, Santa Barbara offers an array of contemporary surf fashion and equipment.

SURF’S UP: MUSEUMS & MEMORABILIA

Santa Barbara’s rich surf history is now preserved and the story told via the Santa Barbara Maritime Museum’s permanent Marilyn S. Tennity Surfing Exhibit: Surf’s Up! Santa Barbara. Surf’s Up! includes artifacts, photos, classic surfboards and other memorabilia, along with oral histories of famous local surfers, surf spots, board shapers and others who made Santa Barbara a leader in the sport. Video clips include Gates Foss, who first surfed Rincon back in the 1930’s, and interviews with Renny Yater, Al Merrick, Tom Curren, Davey Smith, Kim Mearig and Bobby Martinez. In keeping with the museum’s interactive theme, a nine-foot high, twelve-foot long wave with sound and video allows visitors to get a sense of what it feels like to ride a wave. And a surfboard framed by a wave is perfect for photo ops—and figuring out whether you are goofy or regular footed. (The museum is closed Wednesdays.)

Upstairs from the Maritime Museum, the Endless Summer Bar-Café has filmmaker Bruce Brown’s official endorsement and is decorated with memorabilia from the film Endless Summer (1964), a world-famous surfing film that helped define the genre and mirrored the surf culture which has become such a part of the California lifestyle. The restaurant’s collection of surfboards includes one of the first boards made by Renny Yater in 1953 and an abalone inlay board made by Renny and installed in honor of Bruce’s 70th birthday, celebrated at the restaurant. The casual restaurant has great harbor and mountain views, a lively, inviting atmosphere—and you might just spot Bruce himself savoring fish and chips.

For more surf culture, head to the Funk Zone (near Stearn’s Wharf) to visit the Santa Barbara Surfing Museum. Not your average museum, the impressive collection curated by photographer and founder James O’Mahoney includes collectible surfboards, skateboards, skimboards; surf music, books, art and movies; and vintage clothing and antiques. The museum is open Sunday afternoons from noon to 5pm or by appointment, and admission is free.

Round out your surf education with a visit to Sullivan Goss Gallery to see iconic paintings of surfboards and beach scenes by local artist (and surfer) Hank Pitcher. And stop by Jaffurs Wine Cellars in downtown Santa Barbara, near the waterfront, to taste the wines of surfer-winemaker Craig Jaffurs. The tasting room/production facility is decorated with rare, vintage surfboards, and Jaffurs collaborated on a limited edition wine with label artwork by Hank Pitcher.

THE BREAKS: BEACHES FOR BEGINNERS & EXPERTS

Over the years, surfers “discovered” breaks once known only to locals. The most notable, Rincon, is considered the “Queen of the Coast” set on the Santa Barbara-Ventura county line. Waves peel flawlessly for up to half a mile, and it has long been a testing ground for surfboard technology and design by Santa Barbara’s most famous surfers and shapers. Leadbetter, Santa Barbara’s downtown surf spot, provides small breakers perfect for those learning to surf, located just west of the Harbor, across the street from Santa Barbara City College. At the University of California, Santa Barbara, the aptly named Campus Point also has a great break for novices. Although a relatively mellow surf spot, winter swells can produce classic top to bottom barrels (perfect waves) off this shale-layered point. Sandspit, at the Santa Barbara Harbor, is best in winter and is not for novices! The waves break with heavy backwash and long-spinning tubes and are often crowded with surf-stoked locals.

El Capitán State Beach, one of the best cobblestone point breaks in California, is fifteen miles northwest of the Santa Barbara Harbor. El Capitán produces hollow waves (tube rides) when a good-sized west swell reaches around the Channel Islands. There are a myriad of “secret” surf spots in and around the Channel Islands. Exposed breaks, swift currents, and rocky reefs make surfing there very dangerous. Jalama Beach Park, north of Point Conception and quite a bit off the beaten path, is often exposed to high wind conditions. Jalama features both beach and reef breaks, and the dramatic conditions require experience and higher skill levels.

LEARNING CURVE: SURF LESSONS & CAMPS

A variety of surf schools, seasonal camps and instruction options are available for beginners of all ages and group sizes: Santa Barbara Adventure Company, Surf Happens, Santa Barbara Surf School, Santa Barbara Seals Surf School and Ocean Adventures/A-Frame Surf Shop. Rentals are available at A-Frame, Channel Islands Surfboards and Surf N’ Wear’s Beach House surf shops. And, for a different approach to surfing, try Stand Up Paddle Surfing with the help of Channel Islands Outfitters. Note: Novices are strongly encouraged to learn the etiquette—unofficial “rules” that surfers follow to create order and foster safety in the water—before heading out to ride the waves.

LOCAL FLAVOR: SURF GEAR SHOPPING GUIDE

Santa Barbara offers a number of locally-owned and operated surf retail shops that have managed to survive the competition from major chains. While Channel Islands Surfboards might have gone big time (now owned by Burton), the brand has distinctly local roots and the flagship Santa Barbara retail store, located in the Funk Zone, boasts the largest number of boards shaped by Merrick.

A-Frame Surf Shop (3785 Santa Claus Lane, Carpinteria): Run by brothers Sam and Rob Holcombe, A-Frame is right on the beach at Santa Claus Lane and carries apparel, wetsuits, sunglasses and boards. Rentals available for visitors.

Blueline Stand Up Paddle Surf (24 East Mason Street, Santa Barbara): Blueline has one of the largest inventories of Stand Up Paddle Surf equipment in the nation, and offers a retail shop in the Funk Zone.

Channel Islands Surfboards (36 Anacapa Street, Santa Barbara): CIS was started in Santa Barbara by legendary shaper Al Merrick in 1969, and has sponsored some of the best surfers in the world including Tim Curran, Tom Curren, Taylor Knox, Rob Machado, Yadin Nicol, Dane Reynolds, Kalani Robb, Kelly Slater, Lisa Anderson, Rochelle Ballard, Bethany Hamilton and Sofia Mulanovich. The flagship retail shop is the only place in the world where Santa Barbara branded CIS apparel is available for purchase.

J. Seven Surf Designs (24 East Mason Street, Santa Barbara): At the Funk Zone storefront, J7 offers custom boards hand-shaped by co-owner Jason Feist, as well as stylish clothing and accessories with a more fashion-forward bent than typically found in a surf shop.

Rincon Designs (659 Linden Avenue, Carpinteria): Carp local Matt Moore shapes custom boards and carries apparel by the usual suspects including Quicksilver, Rip Curl and Hurley.

Surf Country (109B South Fairview Ave., Goleta): Locally-owned by Goleta born and bred surfer Doug Yartz, this shop receives praise for the staff’s positive, open attitude. New and used boards are for sale including designs by Yartz himself, and the apparel includes local lines like Low Tide Rising.

Surf N’ Wear’s Beach House (10 State Street, Santa Barbara): Open since 1962, The Beach House is a massive retail store, jam-packed with boards, wetsuits, apparel, shoes and accessories. They carry vintage boards as well as Renny Yater’s designs. Rentals are available for visitors.

Korea Blossoms as Asia's Hidden Springtime Gem

Gyeongju South Korea

Cherry blossom season in East Asia usually brings one country to travellers’ minds, which in turn brings flocks of photo snapping tourists to that country.

Just to the west, however, another Asian destination is pulling focus, along with travellers eager for new adventures. Much more than the home of K-Pop, Samsung and LG, South Korea saw its number of international guests increase by over 13% in 2011-2012. It’s also an excellent country for blossom viewing – aka hanami – with festivals running from March to May throughout the country.

Hanami has a long history dating back to 8th century Japan, and has grown to become one of East Asia’s most celebrated traditions, even practiced in the United States and some parts of Europe. In Korea, the return of mild weather lures everyone outdoors to enjoy the flowers, culture, fine food and promises of spring. The cherry blossoms are surrounded by apricot flowers, cornus fruit trees and other plants that thrive in the chilly March air.

While viewing festivals can be found throughout the country, Korea still has plenty to offer the traveller whose dates don’t coincide. Under-sung Seoul is one of Asia’s great cities on the rise, with 24-hour shopping and a range of historic palaces and shrines. Gyeongju is cultural Korea at its finest, with sights such as Bulguksa Temple and Seokguram Grotto, while the important port city of Busan offers Korea’s largest beach and is a favoured seaside getaway for locals.

For those with more time, Jeju Island is an essential diversion. This laboratory of natural volcanic wonders has formed impressive lava tubes and a stunning array of wild flowers, all surrounding the spectacular volcano, Mount Halla. No surprise that the annual Cherry Blossom Festival continues day and night, offering a lively music and cultural program set against a kaleidoscope of wild flowers and orchids.

Select Italy Launches Esteemed Wine Roads Project

Italian Winery Elena Welch Vineyards

The web-based travel company Select Italy (SelectItaly.com), has recently launched two novel wine road vacation packages that combines not only tasting experiences but cultural glimpses into the best wine regions of Italy through the properties of two of Italy’s most prestigious wine families, Tasca d’Almerita and Allegrini.

The Tasca d’Almerita family has been making impeccable Sicilian wine for over eight generations and among their many awards they have recently also been named the best cantina in Italy. All five of the Tasca d’Almerita estates reflect a dedication to superior quality, not only in the taste of the wines but also in the fact they lead Italy in sustainable practices and dedication to research. The Allegrini family, who has lead Valpolicella winemaking for hundreds of years, runs one of the country’s most innovative wineries while continuing to maintain a strong commitment to tradition. The estates are overseen by the remarkable Marilisa Allegrini, whose dedication to the Veneto indigenous grapes in the Valpolicella estates and Tuscan varietals in San Polo and Bolgheri consistenly results her wines at the top of the charts.

The Tasca d’Almerita Experience is a seven-day highly customizable venture that begins at the Hotel Villa Carlotta in Taormina, Sicily, and includes an afternoon visit and tasting at the family’s Tascante vineyards, whose green foliage and fertile volcanic soil are expressed in the Etna wines. The stay continues with a dinner at the highly praised Osteria Nero d’Avola, which offers over 240 Sicilian wines to pair with its stellar dishes of the local cuisine.

Day three moves to Tasca d’Almerita's principle estate, Regaleali, where the warm welcome at the family’s baglio is matched with the stunning sumptuous environment. The stay includes all meals catered by the family’s personal chef, a cooking class at the world renowned cooking school located on property, a tour of the expansive vineyards, and a tasting of fine wines that truly highlight the family and the wine’s connection to the land, its people, and their culture.

The final destination, Palermo, is host to the final property of the itinerary, Sallier de la Tour, known for its production of Monreale DOC with Syrah grapes. The stay includes an introductory tour of the vivacious city and VIP dinner reservations at the Gagini Social Restaurant.

“The itinerary was constructed as a joint venture between Select Italy and the Tasca d’Almerita and Allegrini families in order to provide our clients with a complete experience in and out of the glass,” says Select Italy Food and Wine Specialist, Martina Mirandola Mullen. “We want our guests not only to enjoy the best Italian wine, but to enjoy it while getting to know the place in which it is made, the earth that it comes from, and the people who have made it their life’s mission to bring this comprehensive picture to each bottle of wine.”

Contrary to the Tasca Experience, which takes place in the sole region of Sicily, the Allegrini Experience offers an eight-day luxury itinerary through the properties of the Allegrini family, spanning across the Veneto and Tuscany.

The Allegrini Experience begins in Venice, with a stop at La Serenissima at the five-star Danieli hotel, and includes a tour of the Doge’s Palace and a private tasting at the Danieli’s new Wine Suite. The itinerary continues in the nearby city of romance, Verona, with a stay at the Allegrini family’s lavish private apartment. Dinner reservations in Verona take place at the renowned Antico Bottego del Vino, owned by the 12 families of Amarone and boasting one of the most extensive wine lists in Italy. The stay concludes with a full-day customized visit to Fumane and Allegrini’s acclaimed Villa della Torre Estate, where visitors tour, taste, and explore the 15th century Renaissance villa to discover first-hand the passion for the land that exudes with each of the family’s wine.

The itinerary concludes with a stay in Tuscany’s five star Castello di Casole resort, which acts as a home base for a visit to the environmentally friendly San Polo Estate in Montalcino and Bolgheri’s scenic Poggio al Tesoro’s Estate, both of which are jointly owned with Leonardo LoCascio, the US’ Italian wine superstar. In between tours, tastings and lunches at both properties, relax in the resort’s swimming pool or stroll through the tranquil natural settings of the Tuscan countryside.

Touring Vietnam By Bicycle

Touring Vietnam By Bicycle

The 12-day, 11-night cycle tour begins in Ho Chi Minh City where the eager cyclists can jump in the saddle and ride to Tra Vinh, starting the guided trip with a gentle 52km introduction ride to ease into the experience.

From there on, the guided cycling tour retains a leisurely, steady pace as travelers move upstream along the Mekong through local villages, lush rice paddies and past waving locals to Can Tho and the Phong Dien floating market, before arriving at Chau Doc near the Vietnam-Cambodia border.

Once travelers have crossed to Cambodia they return to the saddle and peddle their way to Kep on the picturesque coastline. Kep offers a beachfront sanctuary to compensate travelers for their pedal-power efforts thus far – a reward that repeats the following day too, after cycling on to Cambodia’s most luxurious beachfront location, Sihanoukville.

Next it’s on to Phnom Penh, Cambodia’s captivating capital, where travelers can take guided explorations of the city’s famous landmarks and must-see sites. Travelers will spend two nights in Phnom Penh, soaking up insider experiences and visiting the city’s most intriguing cultural sites such as the Royal Palace, Silver Pagoda, Killing Fields and S-21 school which was used as a detention center during the Khmer Rouge reign.

On the way to Siem Reap, travelers will cycle out of Phnom Penh across the Cambodian-Japanese Friendship Bridge to Kampong Chhang, another region of great natural beauty lined with seemingly endless clusters of sugar palm trees.

Siem Reap is the perfect gateway to Angkor’s ancient offerings and is said to be the place that symbolizes the soul of the Khmer people. While in Siem Reap tour takers can take guided explorations of Banteay Srey and Angkor Wat – the latter perhaps the most recognizable temple structure in the world.

For those who’ve always yearned to be Indiana Jones or Lara Croft, the tour also provides the unique opportunity to live out their fantasy with a visit to Ta Prohm Temple which was used as the set of the 2001 film Lara Croft: Tomb Raider starring Angelina Jolie.

The final night of the tour of cultural exploration gives travelers the chance to sample some old-fashioned Khmer cuisine at a local restaurant while enjoying a traditional Apsara dance.

“Our expert team of bike-riding Travel Specialists has carefully crafted an experience-packed biking tour that’s sure to inspire cyclists,” said Backyard Travel’s General Manager Maeve Nolan. “We hope this trip will allow travelers the opportunity to understand a unique side of Vietnam and Cambodia from the Mekong Delta all the way to the majestic Angkor Wat.” About Backyard Travel Bangkok based Backyard Travel is an online travel company specializing in tailor-made tours to Vietnam, Thailand, Cambodia, Laos, Myanmar, Indonesia, Japan, and China. The Olive Oil Source Introduces 2014 Harvest Olive Oil and Limited Edition Olio Nuovo

Olive Oil Source Introduces 2014 Harvest Olive Oil and Limited Edition Olio Nuovo

The Olive Oil Source, the industry leader in olive oil-related products, today announced the release of two new olive oils, 2014 Olio Nuovo and 2014 Organic Olio Nuovo, available for a very limited time on their Wholesale and Boutique websites in a full variety of sizes from 2-ounce samples to full gallon options.

Olio Nuovo is created from the first release of a new harvest year and has long been considered the finest and freshest way to experience extra virgin olive oil and celebrate the season. Its fresh flavor is a short-lived experience that can last from a few weeks to a few months before the new olive oil settles into a classic, well-rounded profile. According to The Olive Oil Source, sales of the limited edition oil are expected to last only a few weeks before supplies run out.

The Olive Oil Source Olio Nuovo is produced from early harvest green olives and bottled immediately after being produced. As a result, it is strong, bitter and peppery, and supplies outstanding health benefits due to its high level of anti-oxidants (polyphenols).

“Olive oil’s best and healthiest qualities are revealed when it is fresh from the harvest and carefully milled to perfection. This year’s Olio Nuovo is an exceptional oil from a great year,” said Antoinette Addison, Vice President of The Olive Oil Source. “The new oil reveals a lively, fragrant and peppery vintage.”

The new oils are the latest addition to a full range of olive oil-related products from The Olive Oil Source, including a full range of more than 120 blends and flavors of high quality, authentic olive oil and vinegar and a full line of lifestyle products for the home. Since 1998, the company has been internationally recognized as the premiere source for the highest quality products in the olive oil industry.

Latest Additions to the Wholesale Private Label Program

The new products are also the latest addition to the company’s simplified wholesale private label shiner program, designed to provide specialty food retailers and marketers with immediate availability of a full range of oils and vinegars and rapid turn-around production.

At the foundation of the program is the ability to create custom “shiners”, or unbranded bottles of olive oil or vinegar through a simplified online process. Similar to the wine industry’s approach to bottling wine for later rebranding, the new program includes more than 115 olive oils and vinegars to choose from. A wide variety of bottle styles and sizes provide complete flexibility to the customer. Online pricing and ordering make this an industry exclusive, bypassing the typical “call us for more information” sites that hint at the service without providing detailed information upfront.

Another significant advantage of the program is its low minimum case requirements, allowing customers to conduct their own in-store tests with flavor and sizing options. The program presents a perfect opportunity for olive oil tasting bar entrepreneurs and specialty food store owners to fine-tune their own product offerings to fill in the product line gaps or present a cost-effective self-branded option to their customers.

About The Olive Oil Source

The Olive Oil Source is internationally recognized as the most comprehensive resource for olive oil-related products and information about olive oil. Producers seeking information on the latest commercial equipment, retailers looking to source extra virgin olive oil products, and consumers interested in learning answers to simple questions like “what is olive oil?” as well as detailed information about health and beauty trends in extra virgin olive oil will find “Everything but the Olive” at The Olive Oil Source.

Founded in 1998, The Olive Oil Source is owned and operated by Shawn and Antoinette Addison who have graduate education degrees in agricultural sciences and economics from Ecole Nationale d’Agronomie in France and from Stanford University and manage their own organic olive orchard in the Santa Ynez valley of California. They are among a select group of industry experts able to provide customers with information and products based on both current research and field experience. Wrightsville Beach has been a treasured destination for visitors for decades. Beachgoers enjoy traditional island activities without having to worry about returning to the mainland for supplies, but Wrightsville Beach has a few surprises to make the old new again as well.

Regardless of the seasons, Wrightsville Beach proves popular with visitors of all ages seeking a fun getaway with family and friends. Winter visitors cite their ability to “own the beach” as a reason for coming this time of year. And new destinations and activities make this a popular place to visit year-round.

Easy To Reach…

Wrightsville Beach is North Carolina’s most accessible beach from Interstate 40, and an easy drive from Virginia, South Carolina and beyond. An airport in nearby Wilmington puts travelers mere miles from Wrightsville Beach’s welcoming shores. You will know when you have arrived – a signature postcard view can be found while crossing over the bridge onto the island.

So what’s new in coming to your favorite beach destination? You can plan your trip with the help of Wrightsville Beach’s social media connections, including Facebook and Twitter. Find tips on the best activities for couples or groups, as well as great deals on places to stay.

…Even Easier To Stay

No need to cross back over the bridge – visitors staying at Wrightsville Beach can find just about anything under the sun on the island. Many people are used to eclectic dining options, great shopping, or activities for all age groups, but new restaurants and stores are popping up all over the island, including a Mellow Mushroom and The Daily Grind coffee shop.

In order to usher in a new beach season in 2012, visitors can choose from a variety of options for that special long weekend or cozy winter getaway without putting a dent in their budget. Wrightsville Beach is home to three full-service hotels, as well as a host of motels and vacation rentals. While enjoying a relaxing stay, beachgoers can get their blood pumping at the 4th Annual Cold Stroke Classic, a stand up paddleboard event that attracts those seeking a new adventure at one of their traditional getaway locations.

Top 10 Reasons Why You Should Consider an Apartment On Your Next Trip to London Or Paris

AvenueStory View of Eiffel Tower

How does an apartment stay compare to a hotel stay? Here is AvenueStory’s top 10 reasons to rent an apartment on your next trip to London or Paris:

1. Check In – When you arrive, at your convenience, in your apartment (not from 3pm at a hotel or having to pick up keys at some office). Also, depending on availability, check-out at the time that you want to, i.e. not at 12 noon.

2. Unique experiences – Instead of standardised rooms, each Avenue Story apartment offers unique spaces, real homes away from home – be that a Mansion by the Louvre in Paris, or a chic townhouse in London’s Chelsea.

3. Your own space – for the price of a standard four-star hotel room, you can have your own suite, with its living room and fully equipped kitchen.

4. Free Wifi and International Calls – All our apartments have wifi for guests and we also include a local mobile phone which will let guests contact AvenueStory’s concierge team at all times and make any local arrangements using a local mobile phone. Landlines in our apartments also include international calls to the US, Canada and Europe.

5. Get picked up at the airport and dropped off at your own London or Paris doorstep – without the need to worry to print directions or carry your own luggage. This service is included on all premium apartments.

6. A bottle of wine and welcome hamper on arrival – so you can enjoy the view and begin your trip in style. No extortionate mini-bar charges and you can obviously stock up your own bar by visiting a local store.

7. Insurance – With the apartment industry being unregulated, AvenueStory offers its clients travel, cancellation and damage insurance, offering peace of mind in case anything goes wrong before or during your trip.

8. Daily cleaning and breakfast delivery can also be organised on request, providing the same convenience as a hotel. Cleaning times can be scheduled at our guests’ convenience.

9. Dedicated Travel Concierge – included in the Avenue Story experience, whereby we will provide you with all the information you need to make your stay truly unique. No queueing at the concierge desk to ask for a map – our team organise any day trips and restaurant bookings and your itinerary will be ready and printed for you on arrival.

10. Your own key – feel like you really belong in the city you have chosen, giving you the opportunity to truly live like a local.

AvenueStory was founded by Irina Raileanu in 2011. The company has grown organically to almost 140 chic apartments between London and Paris and continues to expand its local operations at a rapid pace.

The company has exclusive use of some of London and Paris' most luxurious properties, some of them with incredible views of each city, with prices from $100 per person per night.

Would you like to stay at an apartment with incredible views of the Eiffel Tower? AvenueStory has one of its most popular apartments in this area, offering 2 bedrooms and 2 bathrooms for $500 per night, or the equivalent of $125 per person per night. With an average 3-star hotel room in Paris ranging at $200-300 per night, AvenueStory offers unbeatable value for money and luxurious accommodations.

The success of AvenueStory has been driven both by adapting to growing consumer needs but also by revolutionising the experience of short term stays. Starting with match making your desired criteria one by one with their portfolio making sure that you choose the right apartment for your trip, be it a holiday, an anniversary, a romantic city break or even a business trip. Finishing with your appointed concierge meticulously planning your arrival and your stay, not just handing over the keys.

Minimum stay is 3 nights and on average rates for apartments sleeping 4 or upwards are priced from $100.00 per person per night inclusive of all fees and taxes as well as guest benefits including a local cell phone, free wifi or international calls and you can check in early or check out late for free.

With online sites such as Airbnb.com, this method of travel is becoming more natural for the modern traveller, and much of the success behind AvenueStory is its ability to provide something more personal, indulgent and convenient than what customers can find in the market place currently.

A growing concern for vacation rental guests is strict cancellation policies in comparison with standard hotel reservations. AvenueStory has recently introduced a partnership with RentalGuardian offering its guests Travel Insurance options specific for vacation rentals and Rental Damage Protection offering peace of mind not only in terms of travelling but also, cancellation and deposit guarantees.

Be Formally Introduced to Tequila Country

Experience Tequila Jimador

Experience Tequila offers an introductory tequila travel package called Welcome To Tequila.

A fun, thorough introduction to Tequila Country. Taste some of the best tequila in the world, witness the agave harvest, visit distilleries both historic and new, from ultra-modern to artisanal, and see the very best of colonial Guadalajara.

Visiting Tequila is an unforgettable experience. Nestled in a valley amongst endless fields of blue agave, this UN World Heritage Site lies at the foot of a dormant volcano and enjoys excellent weather. With most of the tequila in the world being made in and around Tequila town, our distillery visits make for easy jaunts, leaving plenty of time for evening activities. You will see blue agave harvested, taste it fresh-roasted from a brick oven, learn and see the various techniques of fermenting and distilling and, best of all, savor the finished products in exclusive Old Mexico settings.

Our accommodations are in the colonial Tlaquepaque area of Guadalajara, the capital of Jalisco, cradle of Mexican independence and “most Mexican of cities.” The city features world-renowned architecture, murals, museums, food and music. This is the birthplace of most things you think of as typically Mexican: mariachis (dozens of whom await your patronage at the Plaza de los Mariachis), the Mexican Hat Dance, pozole soup and charros (Mexican cowboys). ¡Ándale!

Experience Russia, China, India and More By Rail with Vodkatrain

VodkaTrain

Experience the Trans Mongolian Railway and the Silk Road across Russia, Mongolia, China, Kazakstan, Uzbekistan and India at ground level, travelling with the locals, experiencing the cities with a local Honcho, eating out and getting around at local prices.

Vodkatrain takes the traditional ideas of group travel (regimented meal times, enforced sightseeing and following strange people holding umbrellas aloft) and gives them a hearty kick up the backside. We prefer to think of it as a collection of young (we run the classic 18-35 age bracket), like-minded individuals who happen to be following the same itinerary. We hope you'll enjoy the company of your fellow travellers, but we make no guarantees!

Vodkatrain sets itself apart from others because there is no 'Tour Leader' or 'Road Crew' to lead the way, but a local Honcho at each city stop. With no set activities you can choose to do your own thing, or hang out with the Honcho and do the group thing. They don't take you to their cousin's brother's uncle's carpet shop, just the places you ask to see or the ones they'd love to show you.

En-route you simply travel on trains between cities as any local or foreign traveller would, and meet a new Honcho at each city stop. You have the benefit of being with a small group (max 15) but none of the restrictions that a tour, with its fixed daytime schedule, might bring, and none of the hassles of making hotel and sightseeing/activity arrangements. It's a nifty combination of backpacking and small group travel at budget do-it-yourself prices, with some priceless info from our local legends thrown in!

Vodkatrain is your support network - providing accommodation, transport, transfers en-route and local Honchos to help you get the most out of your stay. You decide what you want to see, you decide what you want to eat, you decide what you want to experience and you pay the much cheaper local price for everything you do. Whatever your destination it's an unforgettable hassle free journey, with company (and a company) you can have fun with.

The Unmistakable Mark of the True Artist

2001: A Space Odyssey

The other day I was flipping through the channels and stumbled upon a movie I had never seen before. After about 5 minutes a thought struck me - "this movie must have been directed by Robert Altman!" Did some checking and I found out that I was indeed watching an Altman film - Buffalo Bill and the Indians.

Aside from the question of whether it was a good movie or not, I was impressed by the fact that a director can have such a clear and unique vision that even a few minutes in you know who made it.

Many directors have shown this quality: Stanley Kubrick, Federico Fellini, Akira Kurosawa, Terrence Malick, and now the new auteur Shane Carruth (among others). And of the course the genius who started it all, Orson Welles.

These filmmakers produce art that shouts to the world, "This Is Me...This Is My Contribution".

This sort of artistic fingerprint didn't begin with the advent of motion pictures.

Irises by Vincent Van Gogh If you came upon a painting by Vincent Van Gogh that you had never seen before, would you have any doubt whatsoever as to who had painted it? Obviously he was too bold and ahead of his time for 19th-century tastes, but how his work has held up! I had the great thrill a couple of years ago to visit the Orsay Museum in Paris, which contains a large number of famous Impressionist and Expressionist paintings. In that environment it's clear to see who had a clear vision. And when you get to the Van Gogh section - POW! Jumps out like no other.

I try to judge my own paintings in a similar way. I take a few steps back mentally and think, "if people saw this unlabeled on a museum wall, would they know I made it?"

This sort of thinking brings up a troubling problem: when does an artist cross the line from 'clear vision' into 'self-parody and gimmickry'? Notably, J.J. Abrams has caught flak for his signature 'lens flare'. But is this a valid attack? In certain ways, didn't Fellini repeat himself movie after movie? In how many films did Kubrick portray a character with head tilted downward and maniacal eyes staring through the top of his skull? How many times has Malick shown treetops? But these are some of the greatest artists of our time.

This challenge comes to musical artists as well. The Flaming Lips created a masterpiece with The Soft Bulletin. They built on that idea with Yoshimi Battles the Pink Robots. At this point the band obtained an unprecedented level of success and released their most accessible recording to date At War With The Mystics. I sense that they felt a backlash for 'selling out' or 'repeating themselves' or whatever (I completely disagree), but something compelled them to release the borderline unlistenable Embryonic.

I'm sure that some fans feel like it's the most Lips recording, but I don't think I've listened to it more than 5 times since it came out.

On the other hand, at least it's unique. And that should have some value, right?

Even with art that I personally find atrocious (and shall remain nameless), I have to give some points to the artist for being distinct.

In the end I guess the one thing an artist can do that is unforgivable is to be nondescript.

If you have nothing to say, better to keep quiet.

Five Great California Wine and Snow Country Road Trips

Heavenly Lake Tahoe Ski Resort

Heading to the slopes this winter? Although a glass of California wine by the fire is blissful after a day of skiing or snowboarding, why not also experience the places where that wine is made?

Many winter resort enthusiasts in California add to their adventures by pairing a wine country day trip with their getaway. Whether on the way to or from great snow destinations like Lake Tahoe, Mammoth, Bear Valley, Big Bear and Yosemite National Park, or even during a trip, there are many great wine regions to savor.

California's High Sierra "Gold Rush" country is where the world comes to play, where one can admire spectacular snow-capped mountains while sipping a glass of California wine. Wine lovers can also enjoy the nearby wine regions and wines of the Sierra Foothills and Inland Valleys as well as Southern California, which offers some surprising high altitude vineyards as well as great ski spots. Although the vines are dormant, winter is a good time to visit because with the hectic bustle of harvest complete, one has a good chance of meeting the winemakers.

To help inspire wine lovers to add more flavor to their winter getaways, Wine Institute—with the help of some winter fun-loving winemakers and growers—suggests these five wine and snow country road trip ideas. Travel with the Italy Experts via VBT Bicycling and Walking Vacations

Venice Italy

VBT Bicycling and Walking Vacations is the Italy Active Travel Expert–providing excellent experiences for 20 years by using expert, local Trip Leaders, organizing unique home-hosted events and exclusive tours conducted by local guides, and utilizing their buying power to put guests in authentic and comfortable Italian accommodations. VBT offers eleven active vacations throughout Italy in 2014 including destinations in Tuscany, Sicily, Puglia, Veneto, the Dolomites and more. VBT has been offering active vacations to Italy since 1994 and now covers the whole country with a range of bicycling, walking, and cross-country skiing tours that will suit every active traveler. For Italian biking vacations, the level of difficulty ranges from Easy—an average daily mileage of 15-35 miles on flat terrain—to Moderate/Advanced—an average daily mileage of 25-60 miles on terrain that includes more hills. This range appeals to cyclists of all levels, dedication and experience.

“Italy is such a special destination when you factor in all the amazing cuisine, wine, people and the fantastic scenery,” said VBT president Gregg Marston. “And with each region we visit boasting an almost entirely distinct culture, there are plenty of reasons to explore Italy time and time again.” In addition to long running vacations, former VBT travelers will be excited to learn that the company is introducing a brand new bicycling vacation for 2014 called Lake Garda to Venice: Cycling Italy’s Veneto. On the new tour, travelers will explore the gorgeous countryside as they pedal past working farms, wineries and hillside villas.

VBT is expanding upon its core of Italian bicycling trips with three walking vacations—including the return of a traveler favorite Italy: The Quiet Pathways of Tuscany —and one cross-country ski vacation, Slovenia, Italy & Austria: Cross-Country Skiing the Alps. Years of strong vendor relationships and familiarity allows VBT to pass along an unparalleled level of quality as well as value to their travelers.

With VBT, travelers will get to experience Italy from the locals who know it best. “Our vacations deliver the most authentic, cultural experience imaginable,” said Chris Skilling, VBT’s Director of Worldwide Product. “Our team carefully designs these trips to include many unique interactions in the homes, kitchens, and workplaces of locals, which facilitates the feeling of experiencing the ‘real’ Italy.” VBT also offers a variety of off the road activities on their vacations like wine and olive oil tastings at family-owned businesses as well as cooking demonstrations, exclusive guided tours of historical sites, and even family-hosted dinners. Through warm encounters with local people and exposure to their heritage and traditions, VBT guests are rewarded with a finer understanding of Italy’s history and environment. “Our tour was just the right blend of nature, exercise, fresh food, culture, and fun. VBT did a superb job of engaging us in Italian history, culture, and geography as we moved along,” said a VBT traveler on their Amalfi Coast & Capri walking vacation.

All of VBT’s expert Trip Leaders in Italy are natives and know the local customs and traditions, as well as inside information about reliable places to shop, eat, explore, and relax. This aspect is not lost upon VBT’s travelers, as 95% of them rate their leaders as ‘excellent’. “Our guides became friends, offering encouragement, good humor and tips for finding ‘gelato of the day’ which made for great camaraderie with our fellow travelers,” recalled a VBT Traveler on the Tuscan Coast biking vacation. At least one VBT Trip Leader will be biking, walking and skiing with the group at all times and can provide in-depth knowledge of the history, flora, fauna of the surroundings whether it be on a cliff-side trail on the Amalfi Coast or a breezy ride through the rolling Tuscan countryside.

Another benefit of traveling in Italy with VBT is the small group size. This affords travelers the ability to go at their own pace, easily access their Trip Leaders, and get to know the members of the group—all like-minded travelers. “The beauty of small groups from our view point is that it gives us flexibility to arrange for our guests to stay at authentic Italian accommodations like classic agriturismos or the gorgeous masserie that reflect the destination much more than a larger chain hotel would,” said Skilling. “It also enables us to do things like home-hosted events and cooking or art demonstrations that couldn’t handle larger groups.”

As a result of VBT’s long history of running popular and successful vacations throughout the country, the company has become known as the Italy Experts. While leveraging that expertise, travelers will find the cultural experience, biking and walking routes, accommodations, and unbeatable prices make VBT the best tour operator to travel to Italy with.

Founded in 1971 by a Middlebury College professor, VBT offers deluxe, small group bicycling, walking and cross-country ski tours worldwide, including destinations in Europe, Costa Rica, New Zealand, Vietnam, Thailand, Peru, Argentina, and the United States. Each trip includes all accommodations, many meals, two expert local Trip Leaders, unique sightseeing and cultural activities, and on-tour vehicle support for biking and walking vacations. Unlike other companies, VBT also includes roundtrip international airfare from over 30 U.S. cities for all overseas vacations. In 2013, VBT was rated by the readers of Travel + Leisure magazine among the “World’s Best Tour Operators” for the fourth year in a row. Based on reader feedback, VBT ranked 4th in the magazine’s survey, with an overall score of 94.42

"Crash & Bernstein" Is The Funniest Show On Television

Crash & Bernstein Is The Funniest Show On Television

Yes, it runs on a kid's TV channel (Disney XD).

Yes, it stars a Muppet.

Yes, I will be mocked by some adults and intellectuals for making such a claim.

But it cannot be denied - nothing on TV (including Futurama and The I.T. Crowd) makes me laugh as loudly and as often as Crash & Bernstein.

Frankly, I don't really care if anyone else thinks it's funny. But the more people that watch it, the longer it will stay on the air, and the more laughs I will enjoy.

So why do I love this show so much? Let me count the ways:

Brilliant Writing

My favorite brand of humor is the Monty Python style - absurdist with a deep undertone. Crash & Bernstein straddles this line with great aplomb. Crash is intelligent but an innocent when it comes to this new world he's been thrown into. Like Peter Sellers in Being There, Crash is a mirror that reflects the attitudes of those with whom he interacts.

A Subtle Laughtrack

I would prefer no laughtrack at all, but I really admire the fact that the producers have dialed back the volume for this show. A lot of Disney Channel shows go way overboard with the laughtrack to a point that makes the shows unwatchable.

A Wild Premise

The creators have made a genius decision where Crash is concerned: no one seems to notice that he's a talking puppet. He interacts with strangers all the time and not one of them has said, "hey - how is this thing alive?"

Along these same lines, one minute Crash will have a deep knowledge of various subjects, then the next he'll be clueless about something as simple as money. This conceit gives the writers great freedom to tackle any scenario however they wish (which is perfect for absurd comedy).

One Final Thought

This show has been marketed as kind of an "extreme sports hip-hop buddy show" or something. I guess that's a byproduct of being aired on Disney XD. Don't be turned off by this misrepresentation. If you allow yourself to enjoy the show without prejudice and preconceptions, you may grow to love it as much as I do.

Either that, or just turn it on when you're not home to jack up the ratings so that I can keep watching it.

5 Things I Don't Want To See In Star Wars: Episode VII

The Ewoks
Anything Geared To 4-Year-Olds
Lucas has repeatedly declared, "Star Wars is for children!" But he must acknowledge that it wasn't children that made him a billionaire. It was nerds like me that emptied their wallets for all things Star Wars.

I was 12 when the first movie came out. There really wasn't much cutesy-cute stuff like the Ewoks or Jar-Jar in Episode IV, but it didn't prevent us from becoming completely hooked. As a matter of fact, by far the most popular character among us kids was Darth Vader.

A friend of mine has a couple of very young boys who are now Star Wars nuts themselves. Their favorite character? Darth Vader.

Qui-Gon and Anakin
Scientific Explanations for Spiritual Stuff
One of the coolest moments in Episode IV is when Obi-Wan is explaining the nature of the Force to Luke (and Han Solo is cynically smirking). It kind of laid the framework for the entire series: a greater good; more than the physical; the merits of self-sacrifice.

And then, as we know, that was all destroyed with a ridiculous conversation about midichlorians.

No more. As Shakespeare said, "There are more things in heaven and earth, Horatio, Than are dreamt of in your philosophy".

The Empire Cooks Jar-Jar Binks
Lame Humor
It's hard to pick the worst example of this from Episodes I-VI; there are so many to choose from.

Jar-Jar reacting to a flatulent animal.

Jar-Jar stepping in manure.

Chewbacca letting out a Tarzan yell (a Tarzan yell!)

A belching frog outside Jabba's palace.

Jar-Jar's slapstick nonsense during the Battle of Naboo (come to think of it, a lot of these involve Mr. Binks).

Firefly
Straying Too Far From The Formula
I'm sure to a certain extent JJ Abrams wants to put his own stamp on the series. At the same time, there is a reason that we're all crazy about Star Wars.

I don't want Episodes VII - IX to feel like new movie versions of Firefly. Star Wars might be grittier than Star Trek, but it is definitely not as gritty as Firefly.

Obviously the prequels have their flaws, but I will say this: they feel like Star Wars. They are definitely part of the canon.

Luke Skywalker, Princess Leia and Han Solo
Dwelling On The Past
Acknowledging what has come before will be great.

Rehashing what we already know will not.

I think I'm more amped about this movie than I have been since, oh, probably 1980. Because when The Empire Strikes Back was announced, you had no idea what that movie was gonna be. We generally thought, "the whole story was told in Star Wars. What else could there be to say?" And then came what is universally considered the best Star Wars film of all.

I want to be genuinely surprised. I want to be excited like a 12-year-old. I want there to be endless layers of detail and mystery so that I can watch these movies dozens of times and still find new stuff.

Is that too much to ask?
